March 26 2011

New discovery: the awesomely-colored soy wraps.
They are just a bit hard to dig out of the package.

But is it ever worth it. How pretty are these cones? (that's rhetorical question)

There's next to no taste for these wraps. It was a bit like edible paper .. but a great alternative for lighter-tasting sushi.

Second novelty: very expensive nori. This was about $5 a bag of 10 sheets .. (compared to $2 a bag) .
The verdict? It's shinier.
Well, it did have a fresher and stronger ocean taste.

Third novelty: Negi-hamachi. MMM, almost as good as negitoro, which has now become a staple food in our diets.
Y tried to make ochazuke ... but forgot the rice was sushi rice! So it ended up being vinegary porridge which wasn't good ... but unagi makes everything taste better.
A whole unagi!
I think this was the first time we bought hamachi, and we had to try and remove the skin with a tiny fruit knife.  That took forever!

March 12 2011

Mmm, it must have been uni season, because there was a lot of it every week.
Nowadays (in May-June) there's hardly any on Saturday and definitely none by Sunday.
That's right! We used soy sauce packets from sushi takeout.
I think this was attempt two at spicy sashimi marinade.
I can't remember how it tasted so it probably wasn't too good or bad..
Cutting the salmon half frozen was a little easier. But made for harder eating (due to waiting).
New method of cutting scallops!
Rice kindly made by T's mom :D

March 06 2011: Discovery(Fujiya)Space

Aghast at the thought of spending $20 on a tray of uni , Y was super happy to find broken uni sold at much more reasonable prices ... and it tastes as fresh as ever.
Wow, to think we just had 1 scallop each! Talk about restraint.
Hacked up sashimi (salmon, tuna, toro ends, red eye tuna) using our office tiny ceramic fruit knife and a plate. Cutting against the grain was really difficult because the fish tended to just fall apart.

We tried to make the spicy sushi marinade from Fish on Rice's delicious spicy cones. First attempt was really off because we put whatever we thought up into that middle bowl. Including Vietnamese salad roll peanut sauce .....

my goodness, we even mashed the negitoro using a tiny fruit knife on a plate.

In conclusion, our very first attempt to make sushi! Neither of us had ever tried it before.
Verdict: tasty! but difficult to prepare in the office without a proper knife or cutting board.

February 26 2011: Do you remember that time we ate a whole pig?

One of two boxes of crispy pork on rice. I can't believe we had one each ...
... including half a soy duck.
It was definitely the best bbq meat Y has had from takeout/fastfood.
Props to T for lining up for half an hour in Parker Place for this.
A desperate attempt at some vegetables.
Brownie points if you can recognize the newspaper because I can't ...

February 20 2011: I think this is the beginning of a beautiful sushi-ship

One of Y's favorite drinks: grape juice with coconut jelly.
Our first gsc sushi purchase: a tray of uni from T&T. 10 pieces for $14.

This must be half-eaten? Seemed like a lot, but we finished it all.

Ebei Sushi

Dec 22 2010
Attendees: Tuna, Yvuni

Thanks to Tuna for lugging around that huge camera :).
special note: we were especially hungry after not eating at Christmas Market!

Though this is not our biggest # to date, it was definitely the most full Yvuni felt in a long time. She had to rest from sushi for a few days after this!

New secret AYCE item not listed on the menu! Daily Jumble puzzles accompanying AYCE

The innovative way to eat @ AYCE: Sashimi Lettuce Wrap!

Sashimi round one. Geoduck, amaebi, octopus, hamachi, salmon belly, wild salmon, spicy salmon & tuna.

Amaebi, saba, geoduck, hamachi, ika, wild salmon, salmon belly

One of two order of oysters and uni sushi of the night. We ended up eating 8 uni sushi and 7 oysters each! The uni definitely tasted fresher than the norm for this place :).
